Another basin design evolved from a classic,

with the latest design tweaks looking great in a contemporary setting.  The basis of the washstand is a basin set upon a support frame, sometimes presenting as an inset or a vessel basin with a countertop set on the frame, and sometimes as a complete ceramic basin, often with wings or shelves either side of the bowl.  The period style washstands would traditionally be made from tubular steel, usually chrome or gold plated, but might occasionally be two ceramic legs supporting the basin at the front.  The metal stand will provide ample support for the basin, but it is sensible to also fix the basin to the wall to prevent movement.  In the case of a basin with ceramic legs, the basin will need secure wall fixings as they will be providing the main support.

More modern designs for the washstand often feature a timber frame, or an angular section metal frame.  Some will also incorporate a shelf below the basin for setting towels and toiletries.

Taps can be wall mounted, basin mounted or countertop mounted if appropriate.

Feed pipework and waste fittings will be visible below the basin, so the use of a bottle trap on the waste is normal.
