Buying a Bathroom

Traditionally bathrooms in the UK have been viewed as fairly functional rooms, but during the last couple of decades our bathrooms have become much more integrated into our lifestyles, and the bathroom today is a place where we can relax and unwind.  Bathrooms now are designed for living and pleasure, rather than simple in – out functional rooms which we visit through necessity.

Modern builders almost always include at least two bathrooms, even in smaller properties, and manufacturers have responded by developing more style variations, colour and finish choices and shape and size permutations, to ensure there is something in their product range to suit every situation.

With choice comes a degree of confusion for most of us. How can we possibly make decisions about what to buy when faced with so much choice?  Here, the FKBD aim to answer some of your questions and provide the information needed to make the best selections for you.

The installation process. This is an essential piece of the bathroom jig saw but is by no means easy to understand and estimate.  There are several trades involved, mainly plumbing and tiling and usually some electrical and joinery work.  If you plan to relocate items naturally more work will be involved, particularly if you are moving the toilet.

set your budget

Firstly, sort out your budget.

With such a vast selection of products available at widely differing prices, the best place for you to start your new bathroom project is with a firm grip on your finances.  It is all too easy to get carried away in one direction and end up scrimping somewhere else.  Please don’t forget to allow for the fitting and installation, this can be a tidy sum, especially if things are to be moved around.

Your bathroom design.

Design is all about meeting your needs.  If you are changing a cloakroom your needs will be different to changing your main bathroom, so spend a moment or two considering exactly what you require, and of course budget plays a part here too.  An essential part of the design consideration is understanding the plumbing and other service requirements.  Bathroom design is truly best left to the experts unless you are simply replacing things in the same places.

Product selection.

You can narrow your choices firstly by having your design ideas worked out, and secondly, to an extent, by price.  Of course, when looking at price consider the value.  Try to select the items which best meet your needs within your budget. That does not simply mean the cheapest.  Price and value are not the same thing!  Also don’t be fooled by discount figures, look at what you have to pay, not how much you are saving.

high streetWhere to look and buy.

The internet and home style magazines are great for research and for identifying items which fit your needs, but it’s always good to see the real thing and run your fingers across it.   So always try to visit some showrooms where not only can you see and feel things, but you can benefit from professional advice and probably a design service.
